RYLA emphasizes leadership, citizenship and personal growth and aims to:

  • Demonstrate Rotary's respect and concern for youth
  • Provide an effective training experience for selected youth and potential leaders
  • Encourage leadership of youth by youth
  • Rocognize publicly young people who are rendering service to their communities

This year's participants have been sponsored by StonehamBank, the Boys and Girls Club of Stoneham, Barile Family Funeral Homes, Stoneham Animal Hospital and Boyds Direct. Thank you to these members and their companies for stepping up to support the youth who will be participating.

It is with great pleasure that the committee of Gerry Deviller, Sharon Iovanni and Dave Gardner present the following students as this year's recipients:

  • Molly O'Brien
  • Jared Cohen
  • Greg Hopp
  • Jared Penney
  • Brenlee Shipps

In addition, we have two very deserving alternates that will step in if any of the five finalists are unable to attend. They are:

  • Stephanie Bramante
  • Allesandra Molinaro

Finally, we are truly fortunate to have three of last year's RYLA participants serve on staff this year. In keeping with one of the aims of the program, Leadership of Youth by Youth, the program is run by the seniors who have taken the challenge to return and share their experiences with the juniors while having the ability to participate in the program for a second time with a different perspective. Thomas Dalton, Rob Clemente and Maria Staffieri will be serving this year. These young adults are all amazing and they are our future.

The RYLA weekend spans from Friday, May 17th at 2:30 pm until Sunday, May 19th at 4:00 pm. It will be held at Camp Rotary in Boxford. Dave Gardner will be serving as a Family Adviser, a role that supports the youth leadership from the background and ensures that everyone is participating in the program to the best of their ability.

These students will be invited to share their stories from the 2013 RYLA program in late May or early June and this promises to be a great presentation.

With the support of this year's seniors and the five finalists and two alternates, the core of a leadership team is present and will hopefully start an Interact Club at Stoneham High School.
