A collaborative project  of

Rotary Club of Stoneham
Boys and Girls Club of Stoneham
Hallmark Health System

This program is sponsored by a Rotary District Grant to support the advancement of the Boys and Girls Club Triple Play Program. The goal of the Triple Play program is to “improve the overall health of Club members ages 7-18 by increasing their daily physical activity, teaching them good nutrition and helping then develop healthy relationships.”

The grant will support the banquet and a purchase of a new stove and hood for the club kitchen. The banquet will provide a meal of good nutritional choices that are appealing to children, easy to prepare, and low cost.  The nutritionist will also provide an educational session on healthy food choices.

The first component was to partner with Hallmark Health's North Suburban WIC Program and two excellent nutritionists, Jasmine Benger and Ashley Dunham, MS, RD to develop a banquet for families and demonstrate how minor modifications in ingredients used in preparing a meal can have a major impact on both calories and fat intake. The meal that was prepared consisted of tacos and salad. By substituting turkey for beef for the meat, low fat cheese instead of regular and greek yogurt for sour cream, the calories were reduced by ___ and the fat by ____. There was also red peppers, green peppers, black beans and salsa. Believe it or not , they were fantastic!

It was hard to tell the difference in the meat or the cheese, and I think that the yogurt added even more flavor. The desert was another substitute, chilled yogurt instead of ice cream, with a large assortment of toppings, including raspberries, blueberries, granola, and of course chocolate chips, among a few others mix-ins.

Jasmine and Ashley delivered an educational segment which provided an overview of ideas to consider when preparing meals.

There were over forty guests from 4 or 5 families that came to the banquet. It was evident that everyone enjoyed the food, the fellowship and the program. Here is what one family had to say about the event:

Thank you! The family had a great time and appreciated the opportunity to enjoy a good meal out. They don’t get out often with the family.

OF STONEHAM

Grant Request

Kitchen Appliance(s)

Amount Requested: $6000.00

Grant Request:

The Boys & Girls Club of Stoneham is looking to secure funding in order to renovate the nearly 40 year old kitchen facility. The Club is need of construction, and new appliances. By funding the Boys & Girls Club of Stoneham’s request, the Club will be able to purchase a new six burner stove and fan cover over the stove.

Remodeling the kitchen will improve the lives of children in many ways. Studies show that in 1960 four percent of children in the United States were obese. Today that number has quadrupled. Funding this project will allow us to create an environment and utilize a Boys & Girls Club of America program called Triple Play, where we can teach our children healthy eating habits which we believe will create healthier lifestyles.

Overview of the Triple Play Program:

The goal of the Triple Play program is to “improve the overall health of Club members ages 7-18 by increasing their daily physical activity, teaching them good nutrition and helping then develop healthy relationships.”

Triple Play is broken into three major categories – Mind, Body and Soul. The “mind” aspect of the program is geared towards teaching children how to make healthy choices. Productive physical activity dominates the “body” aspect, encouraging children to be strong and fit. Finally, the “soul” aspect is about self-esteem and helping the children to develop a positive body image.

The Triple Play program is a highly successful program which was developed by the Boys & Girls Club of America in partnership with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. In a recent study, conducted by Youth Development Strategies, Inc. (YDSI), the Triple play Program’s impact was evaluated. It found that kids who were a part of the program, on average, were performing 90% of the recommended daily amount of activity while those who were not involved were only achieving 78% of the recommended amount of activity.
