Kindergarten Book Project It is with great pleasure that the Stoneham Rotary Club reports on its extremely successful literacy project for Stoneham Kindergarten students. Through a generous donation from Stoneham Ford, the club purchased three titles focused on the experiences new students have in their first days going to school through Book Oasis, our local bookstore. Eighty-six books of each title were delivered to three different schools, including South School, Colonial Park School, and the Robin Hood School. Each school received one title, and when the students complete their title, the books will rotate to the next school until all three books have been read. When the books have been fully circulated, a portion of the three titles will be distributed to each school and to the public library. The books have all had bookplates placed so future students will know that the Rotary Club of Stoneham is an advocate for learning to read and we hope that this project becomes an annual program. Over 100 students will have the opportunity to read each of these selected titles. The response was amazing as seen in the photographs and we hope it builds their interest in reading and ultimately has a positive impact on their reading enjoyment and ability. Thanks to Craig Celli for his collaboration with the teachers, getting the books ordered, and distributing them to each of the schools with Club President Rosanna Rodriguez. |

Golf Ball Drop Fundraiser
Golf Ball Drop FundraiserHow would you like to have a chance to win up to $2,500 while also supporting our scholarship program for a Stoneham High School student? Then consider buying a ticket or a series of tickets to our first-ever golf ball drop. The club is hoping to sell at least 500 chances to this fundraiser which will be a 50/50 distribution of the total dollars raised. The more we sell, the more you win. The tickets are only $10 per chance, and you can get them from a club member or visit Rotary's Ice Cream Sundae Booth during Town Day. You can also buy them online here:  We will number balls from 1-500 (or higher), and a number will be assigned to every ticket. On October 24th at 1:00 pm, fire professionals from Stoneham will lift the bucket of balls and drop all the golf balls from their ladder truck onto the practice green at Unicorn Golf Course. The first ball that drops into the hole will be the winner. If no ball ends up in the cup, the one closest to the pin will be declared the winner. Thank you, and good luck!

Exciting Membership NewsStoneham Rotary Welcomes Our Two New MembersThe Rotary Club of Stoneham Membership Chair Craig Celli (Century 21 Celli) recently welcomed two new members to the Club – Stonehamites Justin Katz and Lucas Brown Esq.
Justin returned to Stoneham and in 2022 decided to shift focus and to establish Katz Cleaning, a residential cleaning business with an emphasis on using only safe and eco-friendly products and offering a service that is always approached with the utmost respect and care to its customers and their homes.
Lucas earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Bucknell University, and Juris Doctor from Suffolk University Law School. During his time in law school, he had the opportunity to clerk for the Honorable Alexander H. Sands, III (Ret.) at the Massachusetts Land Court where he gained invaluable experience in the areas of zoning and land use law. A current resident of Stoneham, MA, Lucas has served as an Associate Member of the Stoneham Board of Appeals and is a current member of the Stoneham Chamber of Commerce. “We are so excited to welcome Justin and Lucas to our club,” noted Mr. Celli in his introduction of the two new members. “They each bring talents and fresh perspectives that will help our club thrive. We look forward to working with them. We hope that this trend will grow stronger this year and that we will welcome even more individuals who are looking to make a difference in our community through the fellowship of Rotary.” |

DG Alexander Falk's Official Visit On Tuesday, October 25th, our District Governor, Alexander Falk, visited our club to share his thoughts on the meaning of the 2022-2023 Rotary theme. The center image reflects the table, that we as Rotarians, join leaders, exchange ideas, and create impact. The seven dots around the perimeter are the Seven Areas of Focus which are illustrated below:  One of the major initiatives for this year is the environment and what Rotary can do to make a difference! The final piece of the theme logo is the green stick below the image. This is an implement that the aborigines from Australia use to plant, nurture, and harvest their crops. Ultimately, this reflects the tools we have at our disposal to create the Rotary we imagine. Alexander provided thoughts on his journey from his initial introduction to Rotaract, the time lapse before joining The Rotary Club of Marblehead, and his involvement in Rotary Youth Exchange, and ultimately to be selected to be District Governor. Finally, we had three new Rotarians installed into our club by Alexander. They were Stacey McDaniel of the Life Care Center of Stoneham, Jessica Glezellis of Reading Cooperative Bank, and Ann Marie Doris of the Stoneham Motor Company. Two other new members that will be installed soon are Heather Mell of the Greater Boston Stage Company and Roseanna Rodrigues of Northern Bank. Each of these new members will share some of their personal history at future meetings. 2018 Polar Plunge Freezin’ for a Reason: Rotarians from The Rotary Club of Stoneham Jump into the Atlantic for Polio Eradication Rotary District 7930 will hold its 8th annual Polar Plunge on Saturday, February 3rd, at Long Beach in Gloucester. The event is part of Rotary International’s ongoing campaign to eradicate polio in our lifetime. More than 300 people are expected to plunge into the cold waters off Cape Ann this year including the Rotary Club of Stoneham. Last year, over 250 people braved the icy waters, raising more than $89,000 and welcoming Rotarians, friends, and family members from 45 Rotary Clubs. Since 1985, Polio has become the signature cause for Rotary International as it has teamed up with partners including The Global Poverty Project, The Global Eradication Initiative, The World Health Organization, and The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Since that time, more than a billion dollars have been raised among Rotary clubs worldwide and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. When Rotary International took on the battle against this disease, more than 350,000 people spanning 125 countries were impacted. Today there are three countries left where it has not been eradicated- Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria. However, due to combined targeted efforts and donations, Nigeria reported no new cases of polio in 2017 and the number of total cases last year fell to just 21 worldwide! Again, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has again pledged a 2:1 match for every dollar Rotarians raise toward eradication efforts. For as little as $0.60, a donation can make the difference in changing a person’s life. Please support your local Rotarians as they brave the icy waters off Gloucester to help eradicate polio in our lifetime. The Rotary Club of Stoneham has set a goal at $3,400, to aid in the district’s goal of raising $125,000. The district is utilizing an electronic fundraising process. 2017 Swing for Scholarships Each May, the Rotary Club of Stoneham visits Stoneham High School to review the applications of graduating seniors hoping to earn a scholarship that will help fund their continuing education. We read about the students’ families, about their volunteer efforts, about their hopes and dreams for achieving their goals. And each year, we pick two students to receive $2500 Rotary scholarships – and while that will certainly not cover their tuition, it will help buy the books, computers and lab supplies they need to complete their studies for the first year of college. Our members work throughout the year to raise the funds necessary to provide those scholarships. This year, we are hosting our 3rd Annual Swing for Scholarships, and we hope that you’ll want to be part of a really fun event that benefits our community’s young people. Join the Stoneham Rotary Club on Saturday, September 30 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM for Swing for Scholarships 2016, an adult mini-golf social generously hosted by Hago Harrington’s. Foursomes or individuals will join us for an evening of fun, cocktails, food and mini-golf. |

This is our chance to help the children of the world by helping to fund polio eradication efforts. In 1988 there were 350,000 new cases of Polio worldwide. Through October 2016 there have only been 27 new cases. The goal of Rotary and its partners is to completely eradicate the polio virus. Without the complete eradication the virus could infect 100,000 within 10 years.
The members of the 47 clubs in our District have come together over the last several years for our annual Polar Plunge event at Long Beach. These members and supporters have made a significant statement of caring for the children of the world.

Stoneham Star 20168th Annual Stoneham Star!
Our annual talent competition, The 8th Annual Stoneham Star, took place on Tuesday, June 14. Singers and dancers competed to be the winner. The act voted “Stoneham Star” by our judges received a $1,000 prize courtesy of Pizzarello & Silvestro Family Dentistry. Second prize was $300 and third prize, $200 courtesy of MELD, Inc. Randy Perillo was the host, and judges Mark Linehan, Su Mansur and Dr. Joe Pizzarello had the difficult job of crowning the 2016 Stoneham Star!
Proceeds from the competition will benefit the Teen Center at the Boys & Girls Club of Stoneham and the charitable efforts of the Rotary Club of Stoneham.
The show was recorded for cablecast and streamed online by Stoneham TV.

Interact Club UpdateStoneham Interactors to Visit Cradles to Crayons
The Stoneham Interact Club will visit Cradles to Crayons as a service project to package donated toys, art and school supplies, clothes, shoes, books, baby supplies, and hygiene items like toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap and shampoo. The project is taking place at 6:30PM on Tuesday, March 22 at Cradles to Crayons’ Brighton office at 155 North Beacon Street.
Please bring to Tuesday’s meeting any donations that you can provide to be packaged and distributed to deserving families in our community. Any of the above-mentioned items are needed and appreciated, particularly clothes, toys, and school supplies. Click here for more details about the donations they need and can accept.

Polar Plunge 2016The 2016 Polar Plunge On Saturday, January 23rd over 200 Rotarians, supporters, Interactors, Rotaractors, and assorted family and friends plunged into the Atlantic Ocean in Gloucester for the District's 6th Annual Polar Plunge at Long Beach.Craig Celli and Dave Gardner represented our club and took the plunge. We need to have 100% participation in this year's Polar Plunge. If you have not yet made your pledge for their plunge, good news! You can still visit one of their pages and make your donation, and send the information to your family and friends.

Rotary Means Business EventDistrict 7930 Hosts Kickoff of Rotary Means Business Stoneham Rotarian and District Governor Nominee Dave Gardner has begun a "Route 93/128 Rotary Means Business" chapter for District 7930. The kickoff event was held on November 30 at McLane Middleton's conference center in Woburn. More than 40 Rotarians attended the inaugural event and made professional contacts. After cocktails and appetizers, Dave explained the program to the attendees and then introduced Rotarian Andy Winig, who gave a presentation on maximizing results with an elevator speech. After the interactive presentation, the group had another chance to network and practice their elevator speeches before heading home for the night. "What an amazing night," said Dave. "Forty business people gathered for the first Rotary Means Business meeting at the McLane Middleton Conference Center. There was time to network before and after an engaging presentation on elevator speeches that inspire dialog. Combining skill development and networking with wonderful people is a recipe for success. Thank you all who helped make it successful."

Poster Day at the Middle SchoolRotary Hosts Successful Poster Day for Drug Awareness The artistic juices were flowing at the Stoneham Middle School on Wednesday, October 21 for the Rotary Club of Stoneham’s first Poster Day for Drug Awareness. Over 60 students, mainly from the middle school but also some younger and older drop-ins, attended and created posters using art supplies provided by the Rotary Club. The posters represented the students’ expression of the theme of this year’s Red Ribbon Week for drug awareness, “Respect Yourself. Be Drug Free!” After their posters were made, the starving artists were treated to pizza by the Rotary Club.Red Ribbon Week is an annual event for people and communities to unite and take a visible stand against drugs. Started by the National Family Partnership, Red Ribbon Week is the oldest and largest public awareness drug prevention program in the nation. Locally, Red Ribbon Week (October 25-31) is organized by the Stoneham Substance Abuse Coalition (SSAC). The posters were displayed at the Red Ribbon Week Vigil on Sunday, October 25 on the Town Common. They will be delivered back to the Middle School where the students can pick their posters up if they wish to keep them. “We are encouraged by the great turnout of young artists and their enthusiasm both for participating in community activities and for encouraging their friends and families to resist the temptation to use drugs,” said Dennis O’Hara, Stoneham Rotary spokesman. “The SSAC tells us that early education and awareness are two of the most important factors in preventing drug abuse in young people.” To see the photos from the poster event, visit the Stoneham Rotary Facebook page at facebook.com/StonehamRotaryClub. |

Hago Harrington's FundraiserSwing for Scholarships was a success!
The Stoneham Rotary Club's Swing for Scholarships 2015 was hosted by Hago Harrington's Miniature Golf in Stoneham on Saturday, September 26. We enjoyed entertainment by Spinner Music, grilled burgers, hot dogs and sausages, an open beer and wine bar, and a 50/50 raffle and a hole-in-one contest.
Mini-golf began with a shotgun start at 7:00PM and everyone had a very fun hour going around the course.
After the mini-golf game, the party continued until around 9:00PM.

Canova Awarded Fellowship Club Secretary Maureen Canova is proud to announce that her daughter, Monica, has been awarded a Rhode Island Changemaker Fellowship by the Social Enterprise Greenhouse and Founders League. Dave will assume governorship of the Rotary district for the 2017-18 Rotary year beginning July 1, 2017.“David displayed a strong commitment to Rotary and demonstrated inspirational leadership ability,” said John Hall, selection committee member and past governor of District 7930. Mini-Golf Fundraiser at Hago Harrington'sSwing for Scholarships 2015 The Stoneham Rotary Club and our Hole-in-One Title Sponsor StonehamBank are pleased to announce Swing for Scholarships, a mini-golf fundraiser at Stoneham's own Hago Harrington's. The event is scheduled for Saturday, September 26 from 6:00-10:00PM. This adult event will feature a mini-golf game, food, beer and wine, a hole-in-one contest, a DJ from Spinner Music, a 50/50 raffle, and lots of fun for everyone. Stoneham Star 2015Stoneham Rotary Crowns 7th Annual Stoneham Star
The Rotary Club of Stoneham held our 7th Annual Stoneham Star Talent Competition on Tuesday, June 9 at Stoneham Theatre. 12 acts competed for the title, and ultimately Stoneham resident Alexandra Flammia was named the 2015 Stoneham Star for her performance of Don’t Rain on My Parade that had the whole audience on their feet. Randy Perillo once again hosted the show.
Judges Susan Larson, Mark Linehan and Dr. Joe Pizzarello also chose Isabella Moore for second place and the local band Houses, with members Bobby Borenstein, Jake Michaels, Eddie Pizzano and Jon Schores for third place. Keira Haughey and Amelia Borto won the distinction of “Fan Favorite” for receiving the most votes from the audience.
Stoneham Star is a fundraiser for our charities. This year, a portion of the proceeds raised will benefit our new Interact Club at Stoneham High School.
“We are proud to have chartered our Interact club with such a high number of motivated members,” said our President Amy. “The Stoneham Star competition is a fun night and an important fundraiser which helps us continue the work that we do with nonprofit organizations and provide seed money for the Interact club to carry out their first community service project. Richard R. Mansur, 1941-2015 It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our friend and fellow Stoneham Rotarian Richard "Dick" Mansur. Dick was welcomed into our Club in September of 2013 and was active in most of our projects and activities since then, serving this year as Sergeant-At-Arms until his sudden illness forced him to step down. Dick's quick wit, warm smile, and engaging stories will be missed by us all; and his passing leaves a hole in our organization that can never be filled.We extend our heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathy to his wife and fellow Stoneham Rotarian Su, his son Clark, and to his extended family and friends.

Trivial MattersRotary Club Service BEEs Perform Well at Trivia Fundraiser
The Stoneham Rotary sponsored a team at this year's Trivia Bee, a fundraiser for the Stoneham Business & Community Educational Foundation. This group of local business leaders awards grants to Stoneham schools, PTOs, and other nonprofits for educational endeavors. The event was held at Robin Hood School on Friday, March 27.
Team Rotary, dubbed the "Rotary Club Service BEEs," finished an impressive fourth out of 25 competing teams, scoring a 37 out of a possible 45. Team members Dr. Bruce Doyle, Carol Dresser, Maureen Canova and Steve Rotondi were joined by a last-minute addition. No word yet on whether the gentleman was a ringer that propelled them to success.
The members also got into the excitement of the event by purchasing tickets for the many raffle items that were available. Bruce, Carol, and Maureen all went home with items won.
Stoneham Rotarians Chris Nolty, Amy Palmerino, Dennis O'Hara and Craig Celli also participated in the event, but on teams other than Rotary's.
In the true spirit of Rotary, our members managed to help raise funds for a worthy local organization focused on education, while learning a few things themselves and having fun in the process!

Interact Charter FiledInteract Charter Filed for Stoneham ClubThe charter has been sent to Rotary International establishing an Interact Club at Stoneham High School. There are 34 charter members and the club has already met three times, elected their leadership team, two additional board members and five committee chairs. At the most recent meeting they discussed their thoughts about the first service project that they hope to plan and complete before the end of this school year. In line with DGE David Manzi's new Homelessness and Hunger Initiative, they are considering collecting food or organizing an End Hunger New England program. Either way, they are very excited to deliver service locally and begin to plan their inaugural celebration.This has been a multi-year effort led by the club and it just goes to show that perseverance does pay off and often multiplies. |

Interact Information SessionSTONEHAM ROTARY HOSTS INTERACT INFO SESSION One of the multi-year dreams of the Rotary Club of Stoneham has been to start an Interact Club at Stoneham High School. That goal is now one step further to being realized after our information session at Stoneham High School on Thursday, January 8. President Amy Palmerino began the presentation, framing the evening and providing a history of Rotary, Interact and what Service Above Self means to those committed to our mission. Dave Gardner, Youth Services Chair, then spoke about the path that has been traveled to get to the information session and what he envisions in a successful club. There were over 20 students, ranging from freshmen to seniors who were there to find opportunities to provide community service and learn about the opportunities that Rotary's Youth Programs can provide.Keith Harris, an Ipswich Rotarian, shared his experiences about his summer event, "Pedaling for a Purpose". The students listened intently as Keith told a few stories of his many incredible interactions with people he met along the way. He wove how his life-long dream into one which raised $42,000 for the Rotary Foundation and the many ways in which the Foundation funds both local and international projects.
 We were very excited to have Tyler from North Reading Interact and three surprise visitors from Reading Interact, Hannah, Caitlin and Alex. Each shared their stories about either Interact or RYLA. Ranging from building leadership skills to the impact that providing community service had on them, it was clear that they not only loved the program, but provided compelling reasons for Stoneham to start a club. There were also three recent Stoneham students who attended RYLA last year, Saige, Sandra and Gabrielle who are excited that an Interact Club is now within reach. Another past RYLArian, Thomas, who has also served as a senior staffer and more recently, as a facilitator was there for support as well.A survey will be sent to all Stoneham students in attendance to determine the best date and time in the next 2 or 3 weeks to determine if there is sufficient interest in starting a club, determine what projects the students would like to rally around, selecting an advisor and to begin the actual process of chartering the club. From the buzz in the room it appears that a dream has come true.

Community Service Project with Stone ZooHelp to Build a Playground at the Zoo
We have an exciting opportunity to participate in a large scale community service project with Stone Zoo. Stone Zoo has been given most of the funding and management expertise to build at large "activity type" playground. They are in need of volunteers to help build the playground. We are putting together a Rotary Team to help in this tremendous community service project. The project is being led and coordinated by KabooM!, an organization that helps communities with the design and build of playgrounds. On Friday October 31st from 8:00AM until 2:00PM, the volunteers will build the playground at Stone Zoo, under the direction of the KabooM! project leader. This is a unique community service opportunity to get Rotarians involved in a multi organizational effort, one that will certainly receive a lot of promotion and visibility. Out of the Darkness Community WalkDear Rotarians,
I will be joining with thousands of people nationwide this fall to walk in the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention's (AFSP) Out of the Darkness Community Walk. My personal fundraising goal is $1,500.00. I would appreciate any support that you give me for this worthwhile cause. As many of you know in December of 2012 I lost my brother Roger (who would now be 32 years old) to suicide. Before it affected my family directly I did not know much about the resources and programs out there to help people struggling with thoughts of suicide. My family has set up a Team In Memory of Roger R Coutu Jr and would love you to join us in the walk around Lake Quannapowitt on September 20, 2014. The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is at the forefront of research, advocacy, education and prevention initiatives designed to reduce loss of life from suicide. With more than 38,000 lives lost each year in the U.S. and over one million worldwide, the importance of AFSP's mission has never been greater, nor our work more urgent. Diane and Bruce both looking into promotional material through their business vendors as giveaways to students: focus on smoking, piercing, chew etc.
Principal Cargill was contacted by Gerry DeViller at the high school – they are on board with the program. Maureen Canova will contact the middle school to see if they are interested in the program as part of next year’s health class curriculum

The Rotary Club of Stoneham held its annual Induction of Officers Dinner on Tuesday, June 24 at Montvale Plaza. Rotary members and their guests enjoyed a delicious buffet dinner and fellowship, followed by the induction ceremony.
2013-14 President Carolyn Lassiter said, “I am proud of the accomplishments our club has made this past year. Our fundraising and community service efforts were recognized with a Presidential Citation presented to us by our District 7930 colleagues. I am excited to remain active in our club and support Amy and the board in all of their efforts for 2014-15.”
Amy Palmerino, 2014-15 president of Stoneham Rotary, has been a Rotarian for the past 10 years. Amy is also the founding executive director of Stoneham Community Access, Inc. “I am honored to serve as president of Stoneham Rotary for the coming year, and I look forward to working with our District leaders, board members, committee chairs, and members to strengthen our fundraising and community service efforts in the coming year,” she said.

The ABET (Adult Basic Education and Training) commenced on 31 May 2014. There was great excitement and enthusiasm and a lot of fun! We were able to purchase all the stationery, including white boards and a portable steel library (double doors opening on both sides). Below is a photo of the first intake of learners, holding a book of recipes which they hope to be able to read and use in the near future. The books were a donation from Sasko Bakeries. Stop Hunger Nowmarc vermouth to speak at stoneham rotary Stop Hunger Now Program Manager Marc Vermouth will be our speaker at Bear Hill at Noon.Stop Hunger Now is an international hunger relief agency that has been fulfilling its commitment to end hunger for more than 15 years. Since 1998, the organization has coordinated the distribution of food and other lifesaving aid to children and families in countries all over the world. Their Mobile Meal Packaging program is a unique service opportunity that allows volunteers to put their hands on global food aid. Nationally, Stop Hunger Now will package 40 million meals this year, and through partnerships in New England they project to package 1.5 million meals.
Marc Vermouth is originally from Northboro, MA and received his undergraduate degree at Gordon College. He worked at Habitat for Humanity International for four years, sending volunteer teams to domestic and international affiliates before starting his own home renovation business. Marc wanted to get back into work dedicated to enhancing the volunteer experience and joined Stop Hunger Now in the role of Program Manager for the New England region. In this role he facilitates meal packaging events all throughout New England, working alongside companies, faith groups, civic groups, and schools to help end hunger in our lifetime.

 On Tuesday, June 17 we present the 6th Annual Stoneham Star Talent Competition at Stoneham Theatre. Volunteers are needed beginning at 6:00PM. Call Dennis at (781) 572-8467 to let him know that you will be attending, or email stonehamstar@gmail.com.Tickets for the event are $8 for students and seniors, and $12 for adults. Invite your co-workers, friends, family, and neighbors out for this entertaining evening showcasing the talent of our area. Tickets can be purchased online or at the door the night of the show. There will be no lunch meeting on June 17; we'll see everyone at Stoneham Star!  On Tuesday, June 24, our Installation Dinner will be held at Montvale Plaza, 54 Montvale Avenue, at 6:00PM. The buffet dinner is $30 for members and $45 for guests. You can RSVP and pay at www.stonehamrotaryclub.org or bring a check to the dinner. Either way, you must RSVP in advance so that we can give a count to the caterer. Rotary Youth Leadership Academy - A Success!ryla Participants enjoy weekend of fellowship and learning RYLA 2014 was a huge success. Combining great weather, super excited participants, well-trained seniors, committed Rotarians and program specific staff with an incredibly rich program designed to challenge leadership principles led to a weekend of personal development for 76 sophomores and juniors from schools around the district. Participants are organized by families of 9 or 10, with 1 or 2 senior staff and a Rotarian who acts as an advisor to the seniors and the family as requested. After a few ice-breaking games, the program began with creating a family banner designed to capture the personalities of the family and its members. Then it was time for a unique experience. Setting the tone for the weekend, Act – Lead – Inspire, was a challenge to break a pine board with your hand. During this two hour presentation, the facilitator prepared everyone, youth and adult alike, to understand the physical and mental aspects of accomplishing such a feat! Believe it or not, all 120 people in attendance achieved the goal. The excitement was amazing.Another highlight is the Culture Walk. This is not easy to describe, but essentially the leader announces a group, male, female, athletes, from abusive families, and calls them to walk to the front of the dining hall. Then they are asked 3 questions: 1.) describe your group, 2.) Tell us something that you do not want anyone to say about you and 3.) What can those left in the audience do to support your group. This produces the expected distaste of stereotypical descriptions, but allows for open dialogue about how best to interface with those in these groups. This is extremely powerful, especially when you visually see how so many people fit into groups that are associated with physical or mental abuse, drug abuse, dysfunctional families and so many other situations that are often not caused by anyone directly, just sometimes the luck of the draw. Personally, I find this particular program very moving because these young people have been through so much in their life yet still are so committed to making other people’s lives better in every way imaginable. Other elements covered public speaking, discussions around bullying, team projects, communications, skits and of course low and high ropes courses. Program ran from Friday at 4pm right through Sunday at 4pm with lights out at 10pm, although the energy often keeps people sharing their experiences, both before RYLA and obviously what happened during the day. These families actually become families and create friendships that may last a long time even though they are from totally different backgrounds. The RYLA experience shows that we are all more alike than different and that taking the time to understand each other pays huge dividends when a consensus is built that satisfies all involved. Lessons are learned by the staff and the adults, often taught or demonstrated by the students. Without doubt, this is one of the best weekends of my year. It fills me with hope for the future and I encourage everyone to find some way to participate in the future. |

District Grant Project UpdateSocial Media Classes Prove Beneficial for Seniors Su Mansur, service chair, provided the club with an update on this year's service project, funded by a District grant. "Accessing Social Media Computer Classes for the older adult population presented by knowledgeable, committed instructors at the Senior Center of Stoneham proved a popular community project."
The report goes on to say that classes of six to eight seniors were presented the classes in different sessions in the winter and early spring, and that 100% of the students providing feedback reported that the classes enabled them to gain access to social media sites and use them effectively. The seniors included comments such as "great class & very informative," "excellent and patient instructors-thank you," and "very well-run classes."
Our three-member service committee spearheaded the project, and many of our members visited the classes to offer support to the seniors. Thank you to all who participated.
Service projects that make a true difference in our community is what being a Rotarian is all about! We look forward to many more successful service projects in the future. This project only happened because one of your fellow members recognized a need in our community and figured out how to fill it. Bring your ideas to the membership, and we will help to make an impact on the lives of our neighbors.

Trivia BeeStoneham Rotary Enters Team in the Sixth Annual Trivia BeeJoni Gardner, Steve Rotondi, Carolyn Lassiter, Bruce Doyle and Dave Gardner represented the Rotary Club of Stoneham at the Stoneham Business and Community Educational Foundation's 6th Annual Trivia Bee at Robin Hood School on Friday, March 28. The foundation was formed “to develop a partnership among Stoneham's citizens, educational community, and business sector. Its goal is to promote the personal and educational growth of the town's youth,” according to the organization’s web site, sbcef.org. The Stoneham Rotary is proud to support their efforts.Unfortunately, the team fell a bit short of winning the championship this year. They tied for 10th place out of 26 teams (not bad for a first effort), and we expect great things from them next year!

March 11 MeetingLahey Hospital Update and Community Priorities Gerald MacKillop and Michelle Snyder of the community relations department of Lahey Hospital, visited us at Bear Hill on March 11 to go over the results of their 2013 Community Needs Assessment and Community Health Improvement Plan. Detailed results can be found on their website, www.lahey.org. After the presentation, members asked questions and provided feedback on the issues raised as a result of the assessment. Health issues are facing our community that the Stoneham Rotary either already is addressing or can address, and the membership agreed to assist Lahey in whatever ways we can to improve public health. |

Update on Lahey Hospital and Food Pantry DriveFood Pantry Drive and Lahey Hospital Community OutreachLahey Hospital and Medical Center recently completed their 2013 Community Needs Assessment & Community Health Improvement Plan for the communities surrounding the hospital, including Stoneham. At our Tuesday, March 11 Noon meeting at Bear Hill, Lahey’s Director of Community Relations Gerald MacKillop, and Community Relations Coordinator Michelle Snyder, will discuss their findings and present Lahey’s priorities within the community for the next few years based off of that assessment.Service Committee Chair Carol Dresser reminds us that as part of our functions for this year we agreed to do a collection for the Stoneham Food Pantry on a regular basis.

Rotarians Attend RYLA KickoffRotary Youth Leadership Awards Rotary District 7930 RYLA Co-Chairs Jim Babbin and Evan Diamond distributed literature and gave a presentation on this year's program. One of the more significant changes is that this year, sophomores can be chosen for the Award as well as juniors. This change was made in response to concerns about school activities that are preventing many juniors from participating.RYLA emphasizes leadership, citizenship, and personal growth. The program demonstrates Rotary’s respect and concern for youth by providing an effective training experience for potential leaders, encouraging leadership of youth by youth, and publicly recognizing young people who serve their communities.

President Carolyn Lassiter called the meeting to order at 12:18pm. Attendance report can be viewed on the Admin section of www.stonehamrotaryclub.org.
After lunch, Sergeant At Arms Bruce Doyle started our meeting off with Red Sox Trivia for the second week in a row in recognition of their World Series appearance.
Several members mentioned being pleased with The NewsWheel format. PR Chair Dennis O’Hara said that his goal is to have a weekly Wheel sent prior to each week’s meeting.
A discussion ensued regarding the plans for November 12, the date of our evening membership recruitment event. There was confusion regarding whether the evening event would replace the lunch event, or if the Club would host both a lunch meeting and evening event that day. On motion by Amy Palmerino, seconded by Dick Mansur, the membership voted to only host the evening membership recruitment event on November 12.
Dave Gardner mentioned that the District newsletter has been emailed to all members. Members are encouraged to peruse the newsletter to find out what other Clubs in our District are up to.
Carolyn Lassiter spoke briefly about a request that our Club received from the Rotary Rose Bowl Parade float committee. The committee needs cash donations for this year’s float. Carolyn mentioned that our Club has not sent a donation in the past. On motion by Joe Gresci, seconded by Dick Mansur, the membership voted to send $60 to the Rotary Rose Bowl Parade float committee.
Joe Gresci encouraged members to submit names and address of prospective members to him. The Club will mail invitations to attend the membership event on Tuesday November 12, at 6:30PM at Bear Hill. If you have not yet done so, please email Joe with the information. Joe mentioned that he has arranged for hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar. Members who would like to assist Joe in membership development should visit the District website, www.rotary7930.org, which has resources to assist.
Joe then reminded us about the upcoming opportunity to assist Helping Our Troops with assembling holiday packages for troops in Afghanistan. This is to take place on Tuesday November 19th from 3:00-6:00PM at Town Hall.
Amy Palmerino spoke briefly about Stoneham TV’s upcoming second annual on-air auction taking place on Saturday, November 23, 2:00-10:00PM on the organization’s public access channels, 3 on RCN, 9 on Comcast and 34 on Verizon. All members are encouraged to donate items, gift certificates or unique experiences to be auctioned live on the air. Visit www.stonehamtv.org and click on “2013 On-Air Auction” to fill out the donation form.
Su Mansur updated the members on plans for the Holiday Party/Anniversary Celebration. The date is December 16 at Montvale Plaza. Dinner will be buffet style. Highlights will include DJ Bob Shaheen, a yankee swap, toy donations, and a memorabilia table celebrating our Club’s 90th anniversary. Details and a sign up form will be posted on the web site. Cost will be $55 per person.
Carolyn introduced our guest speaker, Anthony Wilson, chair of the Tri-Community Greenway, www.tricommunitygreenway.org. Wilson updated the Club on the progress of the project to date and answered members’ questions. He explained that the project is fully funded and moving forward with plans for a bikeway with wide trails for multiple uses. Future fundraising will allow for construction of picnic areas and exercise stations.

The next scheduled meeting will be held at Bear Hill Golf Course on Tuesday, November 5 at 12:15pm. There will be no guest speaker; the monthly board meeting will be held immediately following the membership meeting. President Carolyn Lassiter called the meeting to order at 12:30pm
Bruce Doyle started our meeting off with Red Sox Trivia.
Joe Gresci spoke about our efforts to engage new members. He was passing around a sheet looking for names and address of prospective members. He will be mailing invitations to attend our membership event that is planned for Tuesday November 12, 2013. The event is scheduled for 6:30 pm at Bear Hill Country Club. If you weren’t able to add to his list today, please email him with the information. Joe also gave our guest invitation cards and invited all members to take some and use them as a tool to attract visitors.
Joe also spoke about an opportunity to give “Helping Our Troops” assistance with packing holidays packages for the troops in Afghanistan. This is to take place on Tuesday November 19th from 3-6 pm at Town Hall. Please consider coming down and helping out, all are welcome.
Dave Gardner spoke about the District initiative to attract members. The district is compiling a list of at home business and producing a postcard mailer with the specifics of each club’s event. Stoneham has 347 prospects. A vote was taken and approved to spend $83.28 to participate in this endeavor.
Carolyn introduced our guest speaker Dawn Bronson from Edward Jones. Dawn’s handouts and presentation concerned “The Entrepreneurial Equation”

Boys and Girls Club "Triple Play" Program
A collaborative project of
Rotary Club of Stoneham
Boys and Girls Club of Stoneham
Hallmark Health System
This program is sponsored by a Rotary District Grant to support the advancement of the Boys and Girls Club Triple Play Program. The goal of the Triple Play program is to “improve the overall health of Club members ages 7-18 by increasing their daily physical activity, teaching them good nutrition and helping then develop healthy relationships.”
The grant will support the banquet and a purchase of a new stove and hood for the club kitchen. The banquet will provide a meal of good nutritional choices that are appealing to children, easy to prepare, and low cost. The nutritionist will also provide an educational session on healthy food choices.
The first component was to partner with Hallmark Health's North Suburban WIC Program and two excellent nutritionists, Jasmine Benger and Ashley Dunham, MS, RD to develop a banquet for families and demonstrate how minor modifications in ingredients used in preparing a meal can have a major impact on both calories and fat intake. The meal that was prepared consisted of tacos and salad. By substituting turkey for beef for the meat, low fat cheese instead of regular and greek yogurt for sour cream, the calories were reduced by ___ and the fat by ____. There was also red peppers, green peppers, black beans and salsa. Believe it or not , they were fantastic! It was hard to tell the difference in the meat or the cheese, and I think that the yogurt added even more flavor. The desert was another substitute, chilled yogurt instead of ice cream, with a large assortment of toppings, including raspberries, blueberries, granola, and of course chocolate chips,among a few others mix-ins. Jasmine and Ashley delivered an educational segment which provided an overview of ideas to consider when preparing meals.
There were over forty guests from 4 or 5 families that came to the banquet. It was evident that everyone enjoyed the food, the fellowship and the program. Here is what one family had to say about the event: Thank you! The family had a great time and appreciated the opportunity to enjoy a good meal out. They don’t get out often with the family.

2013 RYLA Participants SelectedThe five Stoneham High School juniors have been selected to participate in the RYLA program for 2013. Rotary Youth Leadership Award is Rotary's leadership training program for young people. in District 7930, RYLA participants are juniors in high school that have either demonstrated leadership or have been identified as future leaders by their peers, their teachers or others within the community.

Finally, we are truly fortunate to have three of last year's RYLA participants serve on staff this year. In keeping with one of the aims of the program, Leadership of Youth by Youth, the program is run by the seniors who have taken the challenge to return and share their experiences with the juniors while having the ability to participate in the program for a second time with a different perspective. Thomas Dalton, Rob Clemente and Maria Staffieri will be serving this year. 2013 Polar PlungeThe 3rd annual, Polar Plunge for Polio Plus planning was postponed due to the weather on February 9th but was reschduled for February 23, 2013 at the Cape Ann Motor Inn in Gloucester, Massachusetts. This year, David Gardner, the president of the Rotary Club of Stoneham plunged into the ice cold waters of Cape Ann to help raise money to help Rotary International meet it's largest goal to date. In fact, with the support of fellow Rotarians and Dave's friends, he raised $1,296.00 personally and the District raised over $62,000.00. That was almost twice the amount raised last year. Many thanks to all of you. After 20 years of hard work, Rotary and its partners are on the brink of eradicating this tenacious disease, but a strong push is needed now to root it out once and for all. It is a window of opportunity of historic proportions. Your pledge will directly support immunization campaigns in developing countries, where polio continues to infect and paralyze children, robbing them of their futures and compounding the hardships faced by their families. As long as polio threatens even one child anywhere in the world, children everywhere remain at risk. The stakes are that high. August 7th Meeting
Bruce Doyle reported that we have about 11 foursomes and really need to add 1-2 more. Auction items have been coming in and he thanked all Rotarians who have contributed in some way, whether it be golfing, auction items, sponsorships or assisting with managing the event. He also asked those who have not yet responded to try to do so by the end of the week. There are many opportunities available and they are as follows:

Please support this event as it is our biggest fundraiser of the year and makes it possible for us to provide two $2,500 scholarships to graduating seniors who exemplify Rotary's ideals. The Lowell Spinners game on Thursday, August 9th was a great success. There were more than 20 there for the game including Rotarians and their families. The Spinners beat the Brooklyn Cyclones 3-1 thanks to two sixth inning home runs. Amy's son Nicholas and Bob Lusardi's grandchildren all enjoyed running the bases after the game. The fireworks put an exclamation point on a great evening. There was no speaker as the regular monthly board meeting took place immediately following the meeting. |

August 7th Board Meeting
Our Assistant Governor, Peter Majane attended the first half of the board meeting to provide perspective on our club goals and the Presidential Citation for the 2012-2013 year along with discussion about membership.
The Club's annual goals were submitted prior to the District Installation and were fairly typical of years past. The club committed to continue to work on administrative details, increase member participation in events and service projects and increase net membership by two. Dave committed to "Every Rotarian Every Year" and to meet the 100% sustaining member. As you know, we have decided to bill every member for the $100 Rotary Foundation Sustaining Member in quarterly increments of $25. That was to distribute the commitment and encourage 100% participation without the difference in total pledges being made up by the club. If this is successful, we will have that money available for charitable opportunities. The Presidential Citation requirements were distributed to the board members and committee chairs that were present and Dave asked if they could review to determine which specific goals are almost automatic and which ones relate to the current priorities of the club. If we can map out the plan now, we should have no problem achieving the award for this year. Peter is the District Membership Chair and was very interested in our recruitment plan. Dave reported that membership was up last year and that we have 2 potential Rotarians currently. Two evening socials are planned for August 28th and September 25th and we are encouraging members to invite potential Rotarians as well as community members who would be good allies in our events and service projects. We hope to have another VIP Reception in October this year as well to really ramp up membership. Peter spoke about how the New Generations Program will help to increase membership in the coming years by providing our younger members a really exciting opportunity to serve youth in Stoneham. This year, our club awarded four youth with the Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) in May and they are all interested in starting an Interact Club at Stoneham High School this year. We will hear more from them on August 14th at our meeting. |

Rotary Night at Stoneham Theatre Enjoy a Night at Stoneham Theatre with Rotarians from around District 7930. Lumberjacks in Love will be an exceptionally funny show that is sure to leave your belly aching. Tickets range from $44 to $48 and you can register to attend either the pre-show reception and meet Terri Kidder, our District Governor for the 2012-2013 year and a host of other district volunteers as well as members from clubs in the Greater Boston area, or the post-show reception which will provide the opportunity to meet and talk to the cast and crew of the show. Each reception is only $25 and will provide wine and cheese befrore the show and coffee and pastries after the show.
There will also be the opportunity to dine at one of three or four Stoneham restaurants prior to the show, all within walking distance. The entire evening is designed for fun and fellowship but it will also provide a fund raising component. Each portion of the evening will provide pro-rated revenue for the participating clubs and the district. If you are a new Rotarian and have never received a Rotary golf shirt or a Rotary hat, or your shirt or hat has seen better days, please email David Gardner at djg@boydsdirect.com. The hats are one size fits all but you will need to supply your preferred shirt size. We are trying to get the same design as we have had in the past, but we may need to choose a new design but will keep the overall color scheme. Check the website for images of both items. July 17, 2012 Meeting

Joe provided an update on our golf tournament on August 13th. So far we have 8 foursomes but we need to get another 6-8 to fill out the roster. Please remember that you can play as a single and you can invite friends, family, business associates or anyone who is a friend of the Stoneham community. Remind them that the proceeds benefit the Stoneham High School Rotary Scholarships and other local groups. We now have 21 guests registered for the Lowell Spinners and only have 9 tickets left. Guest Speaker - Kathy Harlow of the North Suburban Child & Family Resource Network
Kathy provide a summary of the mission of her organization which is focused on providing resources targeted at families, caregivers and educators serving Melrose, Stoneham and Wakefield.
Services that they provide are:
They have added 361 new families to their program in the last 6 months bringing their mailing list to 1,137 families. They serve a good mix of children under 3 years of age as well as those between 4 and 6 years of age. They have had substantial involvement with dads and grandparents as well as mothers.

July 10, 2012 MeetingOn Tuesday, July 10th, Tom Stirling of Stirling Technologies spoke about Social Media and Search Engine Optimization. His basic recommendation was to focus on organic methods to improve your online presence and increase the possibility of getting higher rankings on searches. The previously mentioned Evening Cocktail Receptions will occur on the third Tuesday for the months of August and September. In addition, based on feedback we will try to have a cookout on the second Tuesday for those months as well to shake things up a little while we have such great weather. Keep an eye out for information about the creation of the monthly service teams. Hopefully we will begin incorporating these into the meeting in July or August. |

4th Annual Stoneham Star - A Great Success STONEHAM – (June 13, 2012) The Rotary Club of Stoneham raised over $3,800 from their Fourth Annual Stoneham Star Talent Show on Tuesday, June 12 at the Stoneham Theatre. The Club chose The Stoneham Theatre Young Company as the beneficiary of this year’s ticket sales and they were please to donate over $1,225 of the event’s profits to such a great educational organization. This year’s auditions were very competitive with the final fifteen including vocalists, a tambourine band, a hip hop dance act, and a magician performing on the Stoneham Theatre stage in front of family, friends, neighbors, and the Stoneham community.

2013-2014 Rotary Club of Stoneham Installation DinnerOn June 18th, the Rotary Club of Stoneham will install it's new president, officers and board members for the 2013-2014 Rotary year. Dinner will be held at Cafe Escadrille at 26 Cambridge Street in Burlington. The cocktail reception will start at 6:00pm with dinner being served at 7:00pm. Please reserve your seats early. |

Boston Marathon TragedyAs you know by now, two explosions rocked the finish line of the 117th Boston Marathon yesterday at approximately 2:50 pm. This tragedy has hit our small community. Six of the injured were from Stoneham, many of them are still in critical condition. In the wake of such a tragedy, StonehamBank has set up a fund to help the families pay for skyrocketing medical expenses. Anyone wishing to donate can do so by visiting one of StonehamBank's two locations at either 80 Montvale Avenue in Stoneham or 493 Boston Road in Billerica or mail donations to:

Justin is a Stoneham native, attended Stoneham High School and was involved with the Greater Boston Stage Company, Stoneham TV, the Boy Scouts of America, town and travel soccer, and the Stoneham High School Drama Club. Justin received his Bachelor of Science from Fitchburg State University - graduating Cum Laude - with a major in professional film & video production and a minor in theatre. He then focused on directing and producing music-related film content, working with companies including Bose and Sony, with artists such as Yo-Yo Ma, Emanuel Ax, and Leonidas Kavakos, and served as in-house video producer at the New England Conservatory of Music.
Lucas is a real estate Attorney for the law firm of Crowley & Cummings, LLC, specializing in both residential and commercial real estate conveyancing, acquisition, and development. Along with his practice and guiding numerous buyers, sellers, developers, and lenders through various real estate matters using his extensive experience in both contract negotiation and title resolution, he teaches continuing education courses for real estate agents throughout Massachusetts as well as guest speaking at various homebuyer seminars throughout the Greater Boston Area.
On Tuesday, June 27th, we will gather at Gaetano’s Restaurant at 271 Main Street in Stoneham at 6:00 pm for a social hour followed by dinner at 7:00 pm. The program will start after dinner.
